Get Moving with Our Young Actors Workshop

I can’t remember the last time I had such a serious case of cabin fever so early in the winter. If the snow storms of December and the Polar Vortex are to be taken as a sign, we’re in for it this year. In short, by February, your kids may be climbing up your walls. But have no fear – the Young Actors Workshops are here! I’ve designed the curriculums for our Winter/Spring sessions as a chance to get your kids up and moving. Classes will incorporate movement, dance, physical comedy and even a little yoga. They’re also an opportunity for your child to play, be silly and chase away those winter blues. We keep class sizes small (anywhere from four to twelve students) so that each child gets plenty of individual attention from our skilled and experienced teaching artists. This means that all experience-levels – even beginners – are welcome.

The workshops are after-school on Mondays (times vary depending on the class selected) and run February 24th to April 14th, 2014. The classes available are as follows:

Exploring Improv: (High School) – Free your student’s inner funny with this workshop which will explore one of America’s favorite theatrical forms. Using games and scenarios, our teaching artist will work with students to perfect their timing and fine tune their impulses. The final showcase will be the students’ version of the popular TV show Whose Line Is It Anyway?  6:30 to 8:30 pm in our Rehearsal Hall.

Stories in Motion (Middle School) – From the Hawaiian Hula to Japanese Noh, cultures all over the world tell stories using their bodies and physical gesture. Our skilled teaching artist will help students craft their own uniquely American tale using everything from American Sign Language to yoga. The students’ story will be presented for family and friends in a final showcase. 4:00 to 6:00 pm in our Rehearsal Hall.

Clowning & Comedy (Grades 3 to 5) – We’ve got just the thing to shake off the winter blues! Under the watchful eye of our teaching artist, students will explore the aspects of physical comedy. They’ll steal from the best of them, learning routines from Italian Lazzi to the Three Stooges and more to create their own show to be presented at a final showcase. 4:00 to 6:00 pm on our Project Stage.

The deadline to enroll is February 10th, 2014. Don’t wait too long to enroll – classes do fill up. Enrollment forms can be downloaded at:  http://montgomerytheater.org/content/young-actors-workshop. Scholarships and financial aid are available.

I hope to see your kids at the theater soon!
