Meet our New Associate Artistic Director!

Hello! I’m Jessica Bedford, MT’s Associate Artistic Director. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to those who don’t know me in the MT community. Though I’m new to the AAD position, I’m not new to Montgomery Theater. In summer 2010, I was hired as the Director of Education. I will still continue in my Education duties – I’m happy to say – but they will fall under the larger umbrella of my new title. Speaking of Education…I’d really be falling down on the job if I didn’t take a moment to plug our upcoming Young Actors Workshop sessions. For the Winter/Spring classes, I’ve designed workshops that will fight cabin fever:

·      For our High Schoolers, teaching artist Adam Danoff returns to instruct stage combat. Each class will focus on a different element of fighting onstage – hand to hand, broadsword, knife, and the list goes on! Don’t worry, Mom and Dad. Adam is certified with the Society of American Fight Directors and is a member of the International Fight Directors Guild.

·      Our Middle Schoolers will work with Ben Smallen (director of MTT’s upcoming production of Aladdin Jr.) to create their own variety and improv show. The final product will be presented to the residents of Souderton Mennonite Homes on April 9th.

·      Students in grades three to five can work with Barrymore Award-winning actress (and leading lady from MT’s upcoming production of Becky Shaw) Kim Carson to explore the elements of Musical Theater. Using basic movement and sound, the kids will create their own songs and choreography.

Our workshops are different than the competition because all of our teaching artists are working professionals from the greater Philadelphia Theater scene. Tuition is $225 per student – that breaks down to just $14.06 an hour! Scholarships and financial aid are available to families who need it. If there’s a young member of your household interested in the Young Actors Workshop, you can download an enrollment form here. Don’t wait! The deadline to enroll is January 30, 2012.

Returning to the topic at hand, it’s always been a part of the theater’s strategic initiatives to hire an Associate Artistic Director. As the organization moves forward, becoming ever stronger, it became critical for Tom Quinn, our fearless Artistic Director, to have a second in artistic command. What exactly will I do in this new position, I hear you ask. Well, a number of things. What I’m probably the most excited about is having a voice in season selection which means I get to read lots and lots of script, something this drama nerd loves. I also have big plans for our dramaturgy program. Most of the dramaturges are locked in for the 2012 season and I’m excited to say that there are some new voices in the mix. I’m also going to serve as MT’s casting associate which means I’m responsible for gathering a pool for actors to audition for each production. We’re hoping my work as a Philadelphia area actor is going to help us in this regard.

There’s more to tell but I’m afraid my lips are sealed until January 23rd when I hope to see to you all for “Coffee and a Conversation” in MT’s rehearsal hall. The event – a conversation between Tom and I, open to questions and feedback from the audience – will get rolling at 6:30 pm and is open to the public. See you then!

A Conversation with THE PHILLY FAN'S Tom McCarthy
